“Cracking Codes”
Teresa and Jill are sitting in a treehouse that they used to hang out in as neighborhood children.
Teresa: This is much higher than I remember. (she peers outside)
Jill: You used to say the same thing when we were young.
Teresa: I may be afraid of heights.
Jill: Come back in here. “You just have to look into my eyes” and take a breath. You’ll be fine.
Teresa: That helps. I can’t believe your parents are selling the house.
Tory yells from below.
Tory: Hey, I know you both are up there. I hear you. Appleblossom moosetracks.
Teresa: (laughing) “You don’t need a secret code.” Come on up.
Tory: It’s been so long. I’m pretty sure I had my first kiss here.
Teresa: Awww my little sister kissing in high school.
Tory: “No need” to reminisce on that. It was TERRIBLE.
Jill: Remember when we used “to play at being spies?”
Teresa: That was fun. We had our own Charlie’s Angels pact.
Tory: Do you remember the handshake?
Jill: No, but “I may speak to you in tongues.”
Tory: Trithee!!
Teresa: Threeat Wreeas Freeun.
Jill: Iree’m glreead youree knreeow itree treeoo.
Tory: “We don’t need Rosetta Stone” or French class for this one.
Jill shuffles under the window where there’s a pile of old magazines. She pulls one out victoriously.
Jill: This Sixteen was the quiz edition! (flips it open to a dog-eared page)
Tory: Was that the one that had all the hunks who could sing and no one knew they could?
Teresa: The best part was after that quiz. When you had to guess the lyrics to “how this song is sung.” It made no sense!
Jill: No it did not. My favorite part of the magazine was the horoscopes. That time I convinced you guys that I was always right for that month because that’s what my horoscope said. Plebes.
Teresa: Ugh, I remember that. You were the worst.
Jill: Who are we kidding? “What I say is true” now!
Tory: (rolling her eyes, sarcastically) “Yeah, it’s true.” You’re always right.
The women continue to flip through the magazine and speak in trithee.
