"Exception to the Rule"
Three friends, Rose, Immy, Miriam (Miri,) are sitting around their living room. They’ve been talking about life and are waiting for others to join them.
Miri: I think we should go to dinner without everyone.
Immy: Harsh! It’s for Rose’s birthday. I’m sure she doesn’t want it to only be the three of us. Right Rose?
Rose: The later they are the more I’m questioning why I made my party so large.
Miri: (exaggerated) Because it’s your big Three Oh!
Rose: You know, I’m okay with that. I mean regardless of how many people attend dinner, I’m still turning 30.
Immy: So practical.
Miri: What are you wanting to accomplish?
Immy: “You need an occupation.” Or rather an occupational change. Or just a job change, your situation is kind of a nightmare.
Rose: That is on my list. Once that happens I can “warrant a vacation.”
Miri: You should take a vacation anyway.
Rose: Sure, but I need it “without anticipation” of getting fired. If I take it now I will be stressed!
Immy: “Nothing’s satisfactory” when it comes to working for someone else though.
Rose: You’re lucky your photography business took off!
Miri: You know we’re all jealous, secretly or not so secretly.
Rose goes to her patio and steps out for a moment.
Miri: (leaning closer to Immy) What did you get Rose?
Immy: I got…. Wait where did Rose go? (to Rose) Where did you go?
Rose: “I came out here to check out” whether anyone is driving up. I’m getting impatient.
Immy: (jokingly) Hey! “Get away from my house!”
Miri: I still can’t believe ya’ll live next to one another. It’s cheating ‘cause you get here so quickly.
Immy: You manage to arrive before me all the time so it doesn’t matter if I’m the unit next door.
Rose comes back in.
Rose: I’m really looking forward to dinner and drinks. This place is super new. It took forever and a half to get this reservation.
Miri: We’ll go soon! Give them ten more minutes and then we can group text to meet at the restaurant.
Immy: What would you be doing if we weren’t all celebrating?
Rose: “I don’t leave this couch,” you know that, so really that. It wouldn’t be different. Well maybe some cake and ice cream.
Miri: What would you watch?
Rose: Good question. I would “turn off the TV” and read the stack of books I keep buying and not getting into. I need to stop buying books.
Miri: “There’s always an exemption” and in this case it’s always okay to buy books!
Immy: Yeah, “there’s always an exception to the rule!” You do you!
Rose: With that piece of sage wisdom, let’s go eat.
