"Ingenue"
Two people are reminiscing on one another. Henry and Ingenue met in college and both too shy to actually end up with one another. It’s summer break and they both are thinking about one another. Henry and Ingenue are on stage together and do not interact with one another. The stage should be set for two different rooms.
Ingenue: “I hear a ticking.” The clock is driving me crazy, reminding me that I’m back at my parents house. I should have graduated this past year, but after all the health scares and failed classes. Looks like I have to do it for one more year. I guess this is “the currency of being twenty-three” and still in college. My thoughts turn “from gold to dust” in this house. I’m so bored. I wonder what Henry is doing. (smiles)
Henry: Why can’t I ask Ingenue out? What is wrong with me? She’s a person. I should “take all [I] can,” but what does that even mean “from the mouth of man.” Those philosophy classes are really taking a toll on my thoughts. Glad to be done with them. She’s so beautiful. “Ingenue framed like a cartoon.” There’s something about her that is so different than the others.
Ingenue: He made it pretty clear that nothing was going to happen between us. “The borders are clear and defined.”
Henry: Her “colors bold and bright.” She’s the smartest person I’ve met. She doesn’t know it though. She wants “to be taken more seriously.” This coming semester I’m going to ask her out.
Ingenue: Henry and his friends are fun to hang out with. Except Taylor and Jordan… “they just play a cue” so they can go home with somebody. It’s silly. Why is being single “such a hard thing to do?”
Henry: I’ll “take all [I] can.” I’ll tell her, “from the mouth of man.” From me, from my heart. That we should go to dinner and a movie. Or bowling. I have time to plan.
Ingenue: Maybe he and I will hang out next semester. I’d like that. If I knew where he lived I would “escape from this town” and meet him somewhere. Hang out now. Guess I have to wait. Can’t leave “before [my] sand runs out.” (sighs) Two more months.
Henry: This summer better go by fast. Can’t leave “before [my] sand runs out.” (sighs)
