"Wake Up"

"Wake Up"

Students are sitting quietly at their desks. Their focus is on Timothy who is snoring lightly. Mr. Peterson is standing at the front of the class watching his class and his sights land on Timothy.

Mr. Peterson: “Wake up!”

Mr. Peterson kicks the desk leg and Timothy awakes with a start. He’s in a sleep stupor and groggy.

Timothy: I’m awake!

Mr. Peterson: Welcome back to class. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Timothy: What? I’ve been in this class all year.

Mr. Peterson: “Do you have a name?”

Timothy: You know me. I’m Timothy. I’ve been here. You all know me.

Mr. Peterson: I’m making sure you belong here “‘cause I would like to teach you.” Is that “alright?”

Timothy: Yeah, sure. It kind of seems off.

Mr. Peterson: “If it’s unfamiliar” you’re more than welcome to leave. I will teach the other students in this class.

Timothy: That’s not very cool man.

Mr. Peterson: You sleeping during my class is not very cool man. So we can go back to learning about “when the sharks are swimming” or where “we…watch them kill.” Those are our options, because that’s what the learning plan says for day 223 of the school year. I will ask again. Do you want to stay here or go to the principal for disobedience?

Timothy looks around confused.

Mr. Peterson: “Yeah, you.”

Timothy begins to leave.

Timothy: “I’m a little shocked” you’re acting like this knowing your past. Don’t forget ir ‘’’cause I can see the future.” It’s not safe for you to stay in this town and keep doing what you’re doing.

Mr.Peterson: That’s it. Go directly to the principal’s office. I’m calling after you leave to make sure you get there and don’t skip out again. Now get out.

Timothy: “Tonight, don’t you fall asleep.”
