"Living in the Grey"
~This post is part of a series: Part I, "Why Can't I Touch It?," and Part II, "Living in the Grey”~
Gary leaves the table and heads to the bar. Lisa checks her phone for anything from Nelly.
Lisa: Who knew I knew how to flirt? "Took 27 years just to land this part." Proud of myself. Will have to tell Nelly about this later.
Gary comes back and leans in. Saying something. Lisa is confused.
Lisa: Hey. Sorry. What? I can't hear over the music.
Gary: Was that the drink that you wanted?
Lisa has misheard what he said.
Lisa: "Was it all I ever wanted?" I mean that's a heavy question. In my childhood yeah, it was. "Was it a dream come true?" Also yes, at that time, but I've grown a lot since then.
Gary: (awkwardly) No. The whiskey. Is it good?
Lisa: (embarrassed) Oh my god. Yes. I thought you asked…
Gary: It's all good. Got to see a side of you just now.
Lisa: What was the most embarrassing thing you've done recently.
Gary: Oh, well the other day "I was looking in the mirror" in what I thought was my work's only bathroom. Also thought I locked the door. I did not.
Lisa: What happened?
Gary: This guy walks in "saying, 'who the fuck are you'"? He scared me. I moved and accidentally peed on my shoes.
Lisa: Yikes. Have you done that since?
Gary: No. "I brought my fears with me" that day and everyday since. Also bought "some shiny shoes" to replace the ones I messed up. What about you? Anything embarrassing?
Lisa: Well less embarrassing for me and more for the others who "told me to be happy" when they took one look at me and let me know that my face "applied me" and them "with blues."
Gary: Guys are dumb.
Lisa's phone lights up.
Lisa: Hold on. It's my friend.
Gary: Was that a Picasso?
Lisa: (while texting) Good eye. "I had a picture with my family on the background of my phone" and then I needed something more private. Picasso is fairly neutral. Oh sweet, Nelly just parked.
Gary: Can I stick around?
Lisa: If you want. Thanks for hanging out. I'm used "to [giving] myself some company but it [makes] me more alone" at times.
Gary: Yeah, it's good to meet someone random. Breaks up the monotony.
Lisa: (flirty) You mean you?
Nelly comes through the door and spots them.
Nelly: Lisa!
Lisa: Nelly!
They embrace.
Nelly: Who is this?
