"Patient Love"
Stevie and Mel are finishing up a date. They’re laughing and it’s been going well. When the bill comes Stevie pulls out his wallet when a small Polaroid photo falls onto the table. Mel reaches for it, but it’s swiped up quickly by Stevie.
Mel: Who’s that?
Stevie: It’s… I “got a Polaroid picture in my wallet.”
Mel: I get that. Who is it?
Stevie: (sighs, slowly) My ex.
Mel: Why don’t you get rid of it?
Stevie: I can’t bring myself to.
Mel: I can confiscate it for you!
Stevie: No! “I’m not going to tear it” up. “I’m not gonna spoil it” at all. It’s important.
Mel: Chill, I was kidding much. Why are you dating then, I mean if you still love her?
Stevie: I never said that. I keep it because “it’s an unspoken heartbreak.” I still feel connected, but also that I need to move on.
Mel: I’ll make this next part easy and give you “a heartbroken handshake” and get out of your hair. You should probably figure this one out. Thanks for dinner.
Mel leaves the restaurant. Stevie sits and pulls out the photo again.
Stevie: “I’ll take” this “with me wherever I go.” I can’t believe I ever let her go. It was those “three words on the tip of my tongue” that held us back. I couldn’t say what I wanted to then for fear those words were “not to be spoken nor sung [nor] whispered to anyone.” That was foolish of me. If I got the chance I would “scream them at the top of my lungs!”
Stevies’s phone starts to ring. It’s his ex-girlfriend, Kai. Startled, but happy, Stevie answers it.
Stevie: Kai! I was just talking about you.
Kai: You don’t need to keep talking about me to random women you go on dates with. This city is small and word gets around.
Stevie: I don’t do that. As they say, “the sand may be washed by the sea.”
Kai: Your metaphors were never that great. I need to get back my dvds and whatever is left at your place.
Stevie: “And the old will be lost in the new.”
Kai: What?
Stevie: I need some time to get your stuff together.
Kai: Why did it get moved?
Stevie: I need some time. Come by tomorrow at four?
Kai: Fine, but be ready by two. Just have it by the door.
Stevie: Bye. I miss you.
Kai: 2pm. Bye.
Stevie: “And though you will not wait for me…”
Phone call ends and Stevie looks happy even though he’s been hung up on.
Stevie: “I’ll wait for you.”
