"Dream"
Xandra, Yasmin, and Zhen are grabbing brunch at their least favorite place.
Yasmin: Why are we waiting in line here?
Xandra: We haven't been in a while, maybe it got better?
Zhen: Very hopeful.
Xandra: You didn't have to say yes to this place!
Yasmin: I thought you liked it. It's been forever since I've seen you both.
Zhen: Too long. Okay I have a question while we wait. (pauses) What did you want to be when you were younger?
Xandra: Oh easy. An explorer. "I played pretend between the trees" all the time when I was little. Actually I wasn't that little when I finally stopped.
Yasmin: I played house when my parents had dinner parties. Got in a lot of trouble. Decided it was my responsibility to serve a pre-appetizer so I "fed my house guests bark and leaves." It was pretty bad. What about you?
Zhen: I would do tea parties outdoors. Had a whole imaginary restaurant where I served all the stuffed animals. Some of them even had attitudes. It turned out okay because everyone always was served and I "laughed in my pretty bed of green." My parents really took care of the lawn.
Yasmin: I miss it.
Xandra: What?
Yasmin: Being younger. What did you dream about?
Xandra: "I had a dream" that was recurring "that I could fly from the highest swing." Somewhere in another country.
Zhen: I just saw a TikTok about a woman doing a swing bungee that seemed insane.
Xandra: "I had a dream" to do that. Now, I would poop my pants.
Yasmin: I want to take "long walks in the dark through woods grown behind the park" close to my apartment. Seems serene!
Zhen: That's not safe!
Yasmin: It's fine. No one is ever around.
Xandra: That's not great. You should go with someone.
Yasmin: Zhen, what's the weirdest thing you've ever wanted to know?
Zhen: That could be so many things. What if I told you "I asked God who I'm supposed to be?"
Yasmin: Is that weird?
Zhen: Not weird but then I swear the stars got brighter. Like "the stars smiled down on me" as if answering my question.
Xandra: Did you find anything out about yourself?
Zhen: Absolutely, "God answered in silent reverie."
Yasmin: There was once that "I said a prayer" before bed and then immediately "fell asleep." Only to wake up and deal with my request for another three years.
Zhen: It works in mysterious ways.
Xandra: I can't argue with that. I just fall asleep and let my inner mind take over.
