"I'm Not the Only One"
The door buzzer keeps ringing in Alyssa’s apartment. She’s across the room from the door pacing, clearly crying and agitated.
Alyssa: I hate him! I hate who he is. I hate what he’s done to me. “For months on end I’ve had my doubts,” but I listened to his sweet talk. His sweet nothings. Making me think that I was insane for even thinking he’d step out. That he’d cheat. I spent so much time “denying every tear.” I should have listened to myself.
Alyssa goes to the intercom, pushes the button, and yells.
Alyssa: “I wish this would be over now.” You really messed it up this time. You really messed me up this time. The worst part of all of this is that “I know that I still need you here.” (screams)
Voice: That’s why you should let me up. Unlock this door. We can talk about it in your apartment.
Alyssa: No… You constantly “say I’m crazy.” Not this time. “You don’t think I know what you’ve done?” I know exactly what you’ve done and who’ve you done it with. I cannot do this anymore. You’re terrible. You’re good for nothing.
Voice: Baby, I’m sorry. You know I’m sorry.
Alyssa: I have a name. “When you call me Baby, I know I’m not the only one.” You can’t even bother to get our names straight.
Voice: Tell me what I’ve done wrong? I’ll fix it.
Alyssa: (slow, deep laugh) You’re not going to change. That’s what you said last time and the time before that, but I’m not a fool. It’s you. “You’ve been so unavailable” and the worst part was finding out why. How many others of me know what you’re doing and have kicked you to the curb.
Voice: No one else knows. I mean…. You’re the only one I’m seeing.
Alyssa: If that were true then “sadly [I’d] know why” you’re begging for me on the stoop.
Voice: Let me up, Baby, and we can talk about this.
Alyssa: I’m not your Baby and I will not let you into this apartment or into my life again. We’re done.
Silence.
Voice: Whatever. “Your heart is unobtainable.” Your loss.
