"Naive"
Ria and Rob are standing in Ria’s apartment kitchen. They’ve been drinking and are meeting up some friends downtown. They’re both in their early to mid 20s.
Rob: “I may say it was your fault.”
Ria: Not this again.
Rob: Why not?
Ria: “‘Cause I know you could have done more” too. You always do this.
Rob: What?
Ria: Turn it on everyone one else.
Rob: No. It’s usually not my fault. I’d fess up if it was. You did it and won’t accept it.
Ria: You’re impossible. “You’re so naive” and so unbearable.
Rob: Yet you keep dating me.
Ria: I’m waiting for you to tell me you’ve cheated on me.
Rob: “How could this be” your question? I’ve never.
Ria: (shrugs) Sure.
Rob: What have I done to get this accusation “by such a smiling sweetheart?”
Ria: Don’t pretend. We know you. We both know your game.
Rob: You want me to tell you that “your sweet and pretty face” is everything I need and I would never cheat?
Ria: That says it all doesn’t it.
Rob: Why do you stay if you know?
Ria: The same reason you can’t let me go.
Rob: Well that is “such an ugly way” to see “something so beautiful...” What do we do?
Ria: Go out with our friends and dance and get more drunk.
There’s silence and Ria gets really upset and throws a glass across the stage. It shatters.
Ria: “Every time I look inside” and really question us. And how we got here. Why do I stay? It is a great question. And Jessie, “she knows that I’m not fond of asking.” So I’ll do it quickly to rip off the bandaid. How many women have you cheated on me with? We’ve been together for 3 years.
Rob: I’m not going to answer that.
Ria: More than 5?
Silence.
Ria: (screams) 10?
Rob: “True of false” you’re not going to be happy.
Ria: That “may be,” but I will get you back for this.
She checks her watch.
Ria: I better call a Lyft.
She looks back at him as she gathers her purse by the door.
Ria: You coming?
