"Valerie"

Steve is sitting on one side of the lake and Valerie and her friend, Jackie, are on the other. They don’t see him

Jackie: I saw you talking to Steve the other day. How’d it go?

Valerie: (giggling) It was good. He’s so cute. I don’t understand how someone can be that good looking and smart. 

Jackie: Ask him out.

Valerie: I’m not going to do that. I’ll wait for him to make a more definitive move. 

Jackie: Well what are you going to do until then?

Valerie: “Well”...“sometimes I go out by myself” and enjoy time alone. I’ll probably keep doing that.

Steve: When “I look across the water” I think I see the girl I like. Wait??? That is the girl I like, that’s Valerie. It’s like I conjured her here as “I think of all the things.” I want to get her attention, but don’t know how. There’s no way she would hear me from here. How should I do this?

Valerie: “What you’re doing” is crazy.

Jackie: I think you should call him. 

She grabs for Valerie’s phone. Valerie pulls away.

Valerie: You can’t do that! Who is your crush?

Jackie: I don’t have one.

Valerie: Bull. 

Jackie: “Through my head I make a picture” of the most perfect person for me. 

Valerie: You’re not answering! That’s not fair. 

Jackie: It’s because “I’ve come on home” and there isn’t anyone for me in this town.

Valerie: New project…find you someone.

Steve: I should not have worked out that much yesterday. “My body’s been a mess” since I let Jack be my personal trainer. Ugh, what a mess. The things we all do for love though. Is there a way for me to contact her? There has to be a way. “I miss your ginger hair” so close to my face “and the way you like to dress” is my favorite. It’s so easy going and edgy at the same time.

Valerie: If I did ask him out, what would I even say.

Jackie: (in a teasing voice) Oh Stevie “won’t you come on over.” 

Valerie: I will never say that! “Stop making a fool out of me” in your fake voice. 

Jackie: Just call him.

Steve: Just look up. All you and Jackie have to do is look up for half a second and I would wave my hands. You’d see me. They couldn’t miss me. Forget only looking up... “why won’t you come on over?” (pleadingly) Look up please. Take a walk around the water.

(yells) “Valerie!”

Jackie looks up and sees Steve. Poking Valerie for he attention she points across the lake.

Jackie: “Valerie!”
